Level Up Your Business Development Skills with Our Summer Boot Camp Series

Are you ready to take your business development skills to the next level? LMA Southwest’s Virtual and Houston local committees are excited to present the third annual Business Development Boot Camp Series!

Programs will include:

BD Boot Camp: Session #1

Speakers: David Freeman, J.D. & Ken Sky
Date: Thursday, June 6
Time: Noon - 1 p.m. CT
Title: Navigating the Hybrid World of Virtual and In-Person Client Development

Description: As we well know, the shock of COVID caused lawyers to rethink how they interact with the market to attract, retain, and grow work. While the fundamentals of business development remain the same – get known, develop relationships, and relentlessly follow-up – lawyers now have more virtual tools in their bag to accomplish those goals. In this program, best-selling author and NLJ Hall of Fame coach David H. Freeman, J.D., and virtual presentation master Ken Sky will discuss approaches that can be used in person and on screen to enhance one’s brand, develop closer connections, and stay top-of-mind.

What attendees will learn

  • Why it’s important to deliver outstanding online experiences.
  • Approaches to enhance personal branding.
  • How to up your game when presenting on video platforms.
  • Virtual approaches to engage new prospects and stay top-of-mind with existing contacts.
  • In-person approaches that leave powerful impressions.
  • A few other fun techniques.

BD Boot Camp: Session #2

Speakers: Wayne Pollock
Date: Thursday, July 25
Time: Noon - 1 p.m. CT
Title: Thought Leadership University: Four Years in 45 Minutes

Description: Most legal marketers know what thought leadership is, but few understand just how versatile and powerful it can be as a marketing and business development tool. In this presentation, Wayne Pollock metaphorically dons his tweed jacket with elbow patches and welcomes “students” to Thought Leadership University. In 45 whirlwind minutes, attendees will learn 12 thought leadership concepts ranging from freshman-level core concepts to senior-level “Huh, I never thought of that” concepts.

What attendees will learn:

  • The not-so-subtle connection between Costco and thought leadership
  • What thought leadership can do that modern science can’t (yet!)
  • Why attorneys shouldn’t worry about giving away their “secret sauce” in their thought leadership
  • How thought leadership can be used as referral marketing and cross-selling tools
  • Five ways thought leadership can be a talent magnet for a law firm
  • What “after hours” advocacy is and why it’s a client service + thought leadership double whammy

BD Boot Camp: Session #3

Speakers: Jessica Aries, J.D., LL.M.
Date: Thursday, August 15
Time: Noon - 1 p.m. CT
Title: Finding Your Social Media Brand Voice

Description: Too many firms use social media as a megaphone instead of as a tool to start conversations, understand their clients' goals, and build relationships. Lawyers are impressive people, so it sometimes feels easier to share awards and accolades instead of real value. In this program, we will discuss how you can re-think your social media content to include a brand voice that is compelling, interesting, and resonates with your ideal clients and referral sources.

What attendees will learn:

  • How to uncover a brand voice that resonates with your clients and referral sources
  • An approach for creating branded content that feels less promotional and more value-focused
  • How to leverage your brand voice to build relationships and help your lawyers re-think their brand voices within the larger firm brand
  • How a solid social media brand voice helps lawyers and the firm attract and retain key clients and key talent
  • How to ensure your social media brand voice and brand image is inclusive and resonates with a broader audience

BD Boot Camp: Session #4

Speakers: Onyinyechi Muilenburg & Rainatu Conteh
Date: Thursday, September 5
Time: Noon - 1 p.m. CT
Title: DEI Under Attack: Practical Strategies to Engage with a Diverse Client Base

Description: LMA isn’t refraining from the elephant-in-the-room conversation of navigating the ever-evolving topic of DEI in the legal sector. Join us in a candid and open panel discussion about how some firms have dropped the ball and how legal marketers can foster an inclusive environment through their work to transform the overall image of the firms. Our panel will open the floor to attendees to share their personal experiences and delve into practical strategies – including training and education tailored for legal marketing teams.

During this program, attendees will:

  • Understand why identifying an individual that has the knowledge and expertise in DEI is crucial to create a positive and inclusive workplace.
  • Discuss the current DEI landscape after SB17 and its effects.
  • Learn practical objectives and determine specific strategies to apply to your firm/legal marketing group. This includes training, education, and creating inclusive work environments.
  • Discuss best practices for engaging with diverse client bases. This includes marketing materials, testimonials, pitch meetings, proposals, and promotional rates.
  • Evaluate cultural competence in messaging – how to utilize sensitive and inclusive messaging and to tailor marketing strategies to resonate with diverse audiences while avoiding stereotypes and biases.
