Leading Remote Teams in a Time of Crisis

Sponsored by: LMA International

Competency: Firm Organizational Structure and Dynamics, Crisis Communications

Leading virtual and remote teams has become a way of life in many industries, but remote working is not yet the norm in most law firms. Enter the COVID-19 crisis and virtually all knowledge workers have become remote workers on very short notice, and their leaders have had no time to prepare. While they may have experience managing teams that are distributed among offices, very few have the experience to lead their teams through this kind of sudden change.

Leadership is hard enough as it is, but layering on the responsibility to help people both cope with these changes and the more global uncertainties, and to get their work done, the challenges become even more daunting.

During this session, we will talk about how to help separate what has changed from your old work life and what hasn’t and how to re-tool for the current realities. We will give you some specific tips and ideas for managing your teams and keeping your sanity when leading remotely.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the types of leadership traits that will help managers excel over distance and how to manage through rapid change.
  • Identify how to deal with the “out of sight out of mind challenge” and how to manage through the isolation of a virtual team
  • Discuss technologies that can be quickly implemented or utilized that can foster communication and collaboration and how to communicate to ease anxiety in yourself and team
  • Identify how to implement processes to track activities and results
