With an early career in sales, management and marketing in corporate America with Time Warner and The Berry Company, Nancy entered legal marketing as an in-house first-chair Director of Marketing for the law firm of Baker & Daniels, now known as Faegre Drinker.

She founded Myrland Marketing, Inc. in early 2002 to help lawyers understand how to grow their practices by making their marketing and business development efforts more relevant to their current and potential clients, then began doing business as Myrland Marketing & Social Media in 2008 to also help lead firms through their online social and digital media marketing strategy. As an early and constant adopter of social and digital media, Nancy frequently consults, trains and speaks on LinkedIn, podcasting, Zoom and virtual presentation skills, blogging, video marketing and livestreaming.

Iris Jones is Akerman's Chief Marketing and Client Development Officer, overseeing the firm's client development team to advance the overall strategic plan of the firm by continuing to grow the firm's client base while deepening existing client relationships. She works closely with firm leadership to build the firm's brand equity and position the firm as an influential thought leader and the law firm of choice for diverse clients in the firm's key practice areas. Skilled in designing solutions based on analytical needs assessment. Iris directs complex projects from concept to fully operational status. She has extensive experience in coaching, training, and providing business development support to all levels of stakeholders.

Before joining Akerman, Iris served as a chief business development and marketing officer for McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC and other AM LAW 100 firms in Washington, D.C. and New York. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas and previously practiced law in Texas in both the public and private sectors. She gained extensive litigation and appellate experience having served as an assistant attorney general of Texas and director of City of Austin's Law Department.

Deborah Farone has had the unique opportunity to play a role in developing the best practices in legal marketing by working with the most respected and most demanding professionals in the world. Her advisory practice focuses on helping law firms, individual practices and lawyers with their marketing and public relations strategy, training and development and strategic planning. In addition, she is often asked to speak at law firm and legal department partner retreats and workshops in the U.S., Asia and Europe. Deborah is the author of the best-selling legal marketing book, "Best Practices: Marketing and Business Development of Law Firms" (PLI 2019), a work based on more than 60 interviews with successful law firm leaders and marketers, general counsel, and innovators in the profession. Heidi K. Gardner, PhD, Distinguished Fellow, Harvard Law School's Center on the Legal Profession, has called Deborah "the leading expert in law firm marketing. Not only has she studied this complex topic from the peak of the legal profession, her research into what works and what doesn't is priceless for anyone interested in growing their business." The book is carried by bookstores of the United State's highest ranked law schools, including Harvard, Yale and Columbia.

Over the past two decades, Ms. Farone has carved out a niche by distinguishing herself as the chief marketing officer of two of the United States' most prestigious law firms, Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. Prior to diving into the legal marketing profession, she honed her business development and communications skills by working at the global management consulting firm Towers Perrin, now Willis Tower Watson.

Ms. Farone has also been involved in the academic arena. She has recently spoken at the University of Pennsylvania's Carey Law School, Cornell Law School and Fordham Law School, and earlier had served as an adjunct Assistant Professor on the faculty of New York University. While at NYU, she developed and taught several courses, including "Effective Marketing and Public Relations for Professional Service Companies" and "Marketing and Public Relations for Law Firms," the first course of its kind offered by a major university.

Ashraf Lakhani is the Chief Business Development and Marketing officer at Porter Hedges LLP in Houston. With over 20 years of legal marketing experience, he is responsible for developing and executing the client development strategies, coordinating the client feedback program, managing public relations, and leading the marketing team. Prior to Porter Hedges, he led the marketing efforts in Texas for both Morgan Lewis and Howrey as they expanded into the state.

Ashraf served as the LMA President in 2018, co-chaired the LMA Annual Conference in 2015 in San Diego, and received the LMA Southwest Region Distinguished Service Award in 2020. He has also served on many committees and task forces in addition to leadership roles as President of the LMA Texas Chapter and as leader of the Houston local group.

He received his B.A. from Duke University and MBA from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He also serves as the Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council at The Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas.

Beth Cuzzone is the chief strategic growth officer for Goulston & Storrs. In her role, she spends time aligning practice, industry and working group initiatives with the firm’s strategic vision. An integral part of the firm’s leadership, Beth manages a wide range of firm growth activities, and she is part of the team responsible for overseeing firm branding, external communications, client relationship support, legal project management, business development and business analysis.

One of Beth’s essential roles involves creating strategies and processes across the revenue cycle from client acquisition to client retention and growth. Beth is well-known for her first-to-market initiatives and drives integration between all revenue-related functions, including marketing, sales, client service, lateral integration, and revenue management. She helps the firm develop:

She is also a former Chapter President of the Legal Marketing Association and Co-Editor of the industry magazine, Strategies.

Beth holds a green belt in Six Sigma business strategy and is a trained facilitator; Fellow in the College of Law Practice Management; certified business development coach; and accredited Smart Collaboration coach. She has been recognized and awarded throughout.

Nathalie Daum is the director of business development and marketing at Dickinson Wright PLLC. Dickinson Wright has over 475 attorneys in 18 offices across the United States and Canada. She is responsible for the strategic business development and marketing for all offices, and for the firms Industries Division. Nathalie is also charged with developing and implementing focused client relations initiatives.

Nathalie is a seasoned legal marketer who helps cultivate and grow new and existing business relationships through an integrated approach of client-focused strategic marketing and business development initiatives.

Nathalie brings 20 years of legal marketing experience and has led the strategic business development and marketing at several previous law firms, including Lewis and Roca (Phoenix), Quarles & Brady (Phoenix) and Gordon Silver (Las Vegas). She has experience with developing and implementing business development, client relations, social Images and thought leadership initiatives, as well as leading several lawyer training programs. Nathalie earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago campus. She served as president of the Legal Marketing Association (LMA) in 2004, and as president of the LMA Southwest Chapter for three years. Despina Kartson has extensive experience spearheading global business development, marketing and communications initiatives, including strategic planning, practice and client development, public relations, design services, and internal, external and digital communications. She leads BakerHostetler’s firmwide business development and marketing department, and works closely with firm leadership to develop and implement targeted business development and marketing strategies.

For nearly two decades, Despina has served as the head of marketing for numerous large, international law firms, including Jones Day, Morgan Lewis, and Latham & Watkins. She played an instrumental role in setting the strategic direction and overseeing the operational implementation of the firms’ client development, marketing and communications programs. Additionally, she led firm re-branding and website projects and worked closely with firm leadership on the combination of two firms.

Despina is a sought-after moderator and speaker at legal marketing conferences and is a fellow of the College of Law Practice Management. She is also the co-chair of the New York Chief Marketing Officer SIG and a past member of LMA's New York Local Steering Committee. Notably, she served two terms on the LMA Board of Directors and as president of LMA's Metro New York Chapter. Despina was awarded the Susan Benjamin Legacy Award from the LMA Metro New York Chapter, a lifetime achievement award given to a long-standing member who has left a distinguishable mark on the chapter.

Adam Severson is responsible for the strategic direction and execution of Baker, Donelson's business development and marketing initiatives, and collaborates with the firm's lawyers and professional staff to maintain a client focus, increase marketplace awareness and facilitate cross-office and cross-practice collaboration. He sets direction for practice group- and industry-driven strategies, public relations, client interviews, brand management, advertising, competitive intelligence and market research.

Prior to joining Baker Donelson, he held similar roles at two other Am Law 100 firms, including more than six years with the Thomson Corporation (now Thomson Reuters) serving in various sales capacities, focusing on ensuring that firms' business development and marketing efforts were aligned with their clients' interests.

Adam is a nationally-recognized presenter and leader in the legal marketing and business development community, and is a fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.

Adam also served on the LMA Board of Directors, including as the president (2015), member at large (2008-2009) and secretary (2007). He was president of the LMA Minnesota Chapter in 2006 and served as the co-chair of the LMA Annual Conference Committee in 2011.

Jeanne Hammerstrom is Benesch's Chief Marketing Officer and brings 30 years of legal marketing experience to her post. Jeanne has firm-wide responsibility for marketing and communications, and oversees a staff of business development, communications, event planning and client service professionals. She also participates in the firm’s Executive Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Women’s Initiative and Client Service Committee.

Active in the legal industry, Jeanne was honored by Crain's Cleveland C-Suite Awards as Chief Marketing Officer - Private Company for 2017. Jeanne is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management. She is a former president of the International Legal Marketing Association and was chair of LMA's 2009 Annual Conference, and a past-president of LMA’s Pittsburgh Chapter. She is a frequent speaker and writer for the legal marketing industry.

Jeanne has transformed marketing’s role at Benesch, making what is typically thought of as a back-office function an integral part of the firm’s ability to attract, serve and retain clients as well as top-notch legal talent. During her tenure, Benesch has grown substantially in size and reach, joining the AmLaw 200 and perennially earning recognition as one of Northeast Ohio’s Best Workplaces. Anne Gallagher joined LMA in 1989 and was imImagestely drafted into service as a board member with the Chicago Chapter (now the Midwest Region). A year later she was appointed to a national (now international) board position, due to a vacancy, in the growing organization, which counted fewer than 500 members then. From 1991 – 2000, due to a series of elections and presidential appointments, she served as Treasurer, helping create and manage the organization’s financial structure in its earliest days. For more than 20 years, Anne worked as an independent marketing consultant helping hundreds of lawyers and law firms with positioning, brand development, business development, public relations and communications strategies. In 2014, she accepted a "temporary" assignment with Jenner & Block, which has yet to end. Anne currently serves as Jenner & Block’s Director of Global Communications.

Jeff Reade is Chairman and CEO of Cole Valley Software, Inc. He has been developing sales and marketing systems in the professional services field since 1988. He created and promoted Legal Ease Marketing Database, which is considered to be the “granddaddy” of CRM systems in the legal marketing arena. Its successor, ContactEase CRM, is used in more than 275 law and accounting firms, with more than 10,000 users worldwide. Jeff has been a frequent speaker and author on the topic of sales and marketing automation, data mining, and knowledge management. He has spoken before the Legal Marketing Association (LMA), Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) and Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM). He has written for the ALA Management Report, LMA Strategies, and numerous other professional services publications. Jeff has a Master's of actuarial science and Bachelor's of business administration from the University of Michigan.

Catherine Alman MacDonagh has been a proven thought leader in the legal profession shining light on innovation throughout her career as evidenced by being a successful law firm marketing professional, a founder and CEO of the Legal Lean Sigma Institute, a co-founder and Chief Enthusiasm Officer of the Legal Mocktail and The Mocktail, a co-founder of the Legal Sales and Services Organization, and her important research and publication on women lawyers.

The majority of Catherine’s work is categorized as “first to market,” whether it is developing and delivering the first courses to bridge process improvement and project management to the legal profession, launching a new organization to serve the emerging role of sale and service in the legal profession, designing ground breaking, experiential training programs, or advancing women lawyers.

During her in-house tenure, Catherine was responsible for design and implementation of several successful business development initiatives. Most notable was her work in developing a comprehensive business development program that identified targets, coached attorneys and used sophisticated technology to track and report progress. The attorneys in the program were held accountable in quarterly meeting with their peers. She was also instrumental in design and implementation of a client service program that began with client and market research and the identification of firm values and promises. The program was multi-faceted and implemented throughout every layer of the firm, teaching every firm member what their role was in servicing our clients and incorporating their service performance as an element of the compensation system.

Catherine is a former corporate counsel and is focused on bringing the voice of the client to her work, which involves legal departments and law firms taking more collaborative approaches to their relationships. As a young professional she was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the City’s 40 Under 40 rising stars. She went on to appear for two years on the prestigious MLF 50 (Marketing the Law Firm Top 50) List, was one of only five law firm marketing directors, and the only one from New England, to be nominated for a prestigious award in the category of Marketing Director of the Year 2000, and won several Legal Marketing Association Your Honor Awards for her work as an in-house marketer. In 2009 she was elected as a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.

Today, as a Legal Lean Sigma Black Belt and a certified Six Sigma Green Belt, she is focused on creating competitive advantages and organizational transformation through the development, planning, and implementation of innovative strategies, process improvement projects, and business development training and coaching programs. Her Legal Lean Sigma Institute is the only body that offers a certification program in project management and lean sigma for law firms; her offerings are so unique that she has a registered trademark in Legal Lean Sigma. Her publications and speeches clearly put her in the recognizable lead in this emerging practice and as a contributor to the professionalism of legal marketing and business development.

In addition, Catherine provides a variety of consulting, training, and business development coaching services through her business FIRM Guidance.

Catherine has also been a prolific author and speaker on many topics. She serves as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School and at George Washington University (Masters in Law Firm Management program), and has been a mentor to many in the LMA community, both through formal mentoring programs and informally, and to young lawyers and business students she meets through her work with The Legal Mocktail and the Mocktail.

Jennifer A. Manton | 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee

Jennifer Manton, one of the first LMA members to deliberately choose legal marketing as her profession in the pursuit of a rewarding and successful career, is a consistent and respected contributor and mentor, thought leader, strategic visionary and change agent within the industry for which she is fiercely and passionately devoted.

Since September 2014, Jennifer has served as the Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer for Kramer Levin, 375 attorney firms rooted in New York City. As one of the leading legal marketing and business development practitioners, Jennifer applies an integrated marketing communications and business development strategies together to drive law firm growth and enhance the Kramer Levin brand's image and value.

Jennifer has also been a visible and dedicated supporter and leader of law firm marketing through LMA over the course of her long and esteemed career. Though Jennifer’s initiative and leadership as founder and president of the Pittsburgh chapter (1997-99), president of the New York chapter (2003), International LMA president-elect (2008), president (2009) and imImageste past president (2010), along with leading and participating in several key initiatives of the association since 2010, the organization grew its membership and provided new and valuable services to members. Jennifer also served as co-chair with Dave Bruns on the Regional Implementations Task Force in the successful transition of the LMA’s chapter organizational structure into a regional structure. This evolution enabled the association to better serve its members and provide them more value. Unfailingly devoted, Jennifer has been a principal participant in the maturation of LMA and the legal marketing profession for the past 19+ years.

Throughout her career, Jennifer has taken pride in serving as a mentor to her peers, her staff and other colleagues within the legal marketing profession. She has spread her passion for the industry, encouraged active involvement in LMA and championed the forward-thinking vision and innovation that has made such an impact in her own career.

Jennifer was also inducted into the College of Law Practice Management in 2011. She was sponsored by College Fellow and LMA member Cherie Olland, who at her induction cited her as “one of few leaders in legal marketing that has been able to identify things that we, as a profession, could do better and then actually find a way to implement them to effect lasting change.” The College of Law Practice Management formally recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the law practice management profession over a period of not less than ten years.

Merry Neitlich has served the Legal Marketing Association on the local, regional and national level for more than 23 years. She served on the National Board of the Association when it was called NALFMA as the National Vice President, as well as on the Southern California Chapter Board Los Angeles Board. She co-chaired the 1998 Annual Conference in Los Angeles and has served and led several LMA Committees, including the Education Committee.

Merry is one of our profession’s first marketing consultant. She and Anne Gallagher started Extreme Marketing 25 years ago. Now EM Marketing, Merry continues to help law firms develop a strategy and brand that reflects their true nature.

If you are a legal marketer in Orange County, you know Merry. You’ve seen her presentations at local chapter events, you’ve benefitted from her expansive network, and it is likely that you’ve been the recipient of her generous advice and love. Merry, like all of our inductees today, has invested a great deal of her time to mentoring and supporting fellow legal marketers.

Merry is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management and a recipient of several Your Honor awards. She is also a five-time national skating champion and continues to inspire generations of marketers and skaters.

Lisa M. Simon has served as President of the Rocky Mountain Chapter and the International Board of Directors. She has chaired the Education Committee and co-chaired the LMA QuickStart® program for years. Lisa also co-chaired the Your Honor Awards for several years and helped launch the Leadership Development Certificate program in 2016.

She is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and has served as CMO in some of the largest and most innovative law firms in the United States.

Lisa’s term as President at LMA was not an easy time for the association. Lisa led our organization through a time of significant change, characterized by LMA hiring its first employee, Betsi Roach, changing the management company and setting a new strategic direction with the support of the Strategic Planning Task Force. Being President of LMA was more than a second job for Lisa. Her efforts, along with Jennifer Manton and the Board, created the foundation for the success and stability LMA enjoys today.

That being said, Lisa’s greatest contribution to LMA is the quiet insights and support she has given as a mentor and guide to many legal marketers over the past 20 years.

Nathaniel Slavin is a founder and partner in the Wicker Park Group. He plays a key role in all programs offered by WPG.

He served as Publisher of InsideCounsel (Corporate Legal Times) and held various editorial and management positions for this management monthly for corporate legal executives as well as a series of specialty publications (1992–2006). Nat's monthly column, Interactions, explored the issues that challenge legal departments and their law firms and businesses advisors. For the first nine years of his career, Kevin McMurdo was a community college teacher (speech and theater) and administrator. During that time, he completed his law degree attending nights at Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon. He became a member of the Oregon Bar in 1985 and developed a limited estate planning practice. In 1987, he joined the Portland, Oregon-based law firm of Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt as the firm's first Director of Client Relations. Kevin joined Stoel Rives, another Northwest-based law firm, in a similar capacity in 1991. While at Stoel Rives, he was elected national president of the National Association of Law Firm Marketing Administrators (NALFMA), the predecessor of LMA. Following the merger of Coopers & Lybrand with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in 1997, Kevin became an independent consultant and secured Deloitte as his "anchor client."  From 1997-2001, Kevin continued as an independent consultant, working with Deloitte, a number of national law firms, and as an instructor for Bill Flannery and the WJF Institute. In 2002, he joined Perkins Coie. Kevin is married and the father of three adult children. He and his wife, Jenny, live in the Seattle area on Vashon Island. He enjoys running (completed his first/only marathon at age 60) and serves on the Vashon Allied Arts board.

Marcie Johnson was one of 11 legal marketers in the country in 1983 and established the marketing function at law firms Friedman & Koven, Lord Bissell & Brook and Chapman and Cutler, ending her career after 15 years at Schiff Hardin LLP. She was the first Membership Chair for NALFMA, (now known as LMA) then Treasurer and the 6th President. She established the first (Chicago) Chapter of the Association and served as the chapter's first President. Marcie was the first non-lawyer representative to the American Bar Association Advertising Commission, serving for three years. And she has served on numerous boards and committees and spoken at conferences across North America. Retired, she now keeps busy with volunteer work at the Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and as an Ambassador at NMH. She also serves on the board of her Homeowners Association, was a member of the Member Value Task Force for LMA and was a judge for the Midwest Chapter Your Honor Awards in 2011 and 2014. She travels to LA as often as she can to see her grandchildren and spends as much time as possible at the pool in the brief summer Chicago enjoys. She says that retirement is "interesting."
