Catherine Alman MacDonagh has been a proven thought leader in the legal profession shining light on innovation throughout her career as evidenced by being a successful law firm marketing professional, a founder and CEO of the Legal Lean Sigma Institute, a co-founder and Chief Enthusiasm Officer of the Legal Mocktail and The Mocktail, a co-founder of the Legal Sales and Services Organization, and her important research and publication on women lawyers.
The majority of Catherine’s work is categorized as “first to market,” whether it is developing and delivering the first courses to bridge process improvement and project management to the legal profession, launching a new organization to serve the emerging role of sale and service in the legal profession, designing ground breaking, experiential training programs, or advancing women lawyers.
During her in-house tenure, Catherine was responsible for design and implementation of several successful business development initiatives. Most notable was her work in developing a comprehensive business development program that identified targets, coached attorneys and used sophisticated technology to track and report progress. The attorneys in the program were held accountable in quarterly meeting with their peers. She was also instrumental in design and implementation of a client service program that began with client and market research and the identification of firm values and promises. The program was multi-faceted and implemented throughout every layer of the firm, teaching every firm member what their role was in servicing our clients and incorporating their service performance as an element of the compensation system.
Catherine is a former corporate counsel and is focused on bringing the voice of the client to her work, which involves legal departments and law firms taking more collaborative approaches to their relationships. As a young professional she was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the City’s 40 Under 40 rising stars. She went on to appear for two years on the prestigious MLF 50 (Marketing the Law Firm Top 50) List, was one of only five law firm marketing directors, and the only one from New England, to be nominated for a prestigious award in the category of Marketing Director of the Year 2000, and won several Legal Marketing Association Your Honor Awards for her work as an in-house marketer. In 2009 she was elected as a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management.
Today, as a Legal Lean Sigma Black Belt and a certified Six Sigma Green Belt, she is focused on creating competitive advantages and organizational transformation through the development, planning, and implementation of innovative strategies, process improvement projects, and business development training and coaching programs. Her Legal Lean Sigma Institute is the only body that offers a certification program in project management and lean sigma for law firms; her offerings are so unique that she has a registered trademark in Legal Lean Sigma. Her publications and speeches clearly put her in the recognizable lead in this emerging practice and as a contributor to the professionalism of legal marketing and business development.
In addition, Catherine provides a variety of consulting, training, and business development coaching services through her business FIRM Guidance.
Catherine has also been a prolific author and speaker on many topics. She serves as an adjunct professor at Suffolk University Law School and at George Washington University (Masters in Law Firm Management program), and has been a mentor to many in the LMA community, both through formal mentoring programs and informally, and to young lawyers and business students she meets through her work with The Legal Mocktail and the Mocktail.
